From Father’s Desk

It was pride that changed angels into devils; it is humility that makes men as angels. ~ St Augustine.

Dear Parishioners:

As we commence the 2nd week of Lent. Why not add a litany to your devotions? The Litany of Humility, prayed often and with devotion, can help us enter into the mind of Christ. It will help to break us of our self-centeredness and place God at the center instead. It will help “lose your life” as the Lord tells us to do for His sake (Matthew 10:29) so that He may help us find it. Further on in the same Gospel the Lord tells us to learn from Him “for I am meek and humble of heart” (Matt 11:29). As Saint James reminds us “God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble” (Letter of St. James 4:6).

It is contrary to the way of the world to put other’s needs ahead of our own, but that is what the Lord wants us to understand is the way of Godly strength–and the way of true holiness. God promises that He will do what we ask Him to do, but also that He will only give us the best for us. It is in humbling ourselves that we learn of the great gift that we have from the Lord–His very self. When we cast out pride we are lifted up by the Lord. “He who exalts imself will be humbled and he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Matthew 23:12). Jesus consoles us with the thought that when we are persecuted for His sake we should “rejoice and be glad, because your reward is great in heaven” (Matthew 5:12).

The Lord of all humbled Himself when He took on our flesh and our sins for our salvation. “He emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, He humbled Himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted Him.” (St Paul to the Philippians 2:7-9).

The Litany of Humility
Lord Jesus, meek and humble of heart. Hear me.

From the desire of being esteemed. Deliver me, Jesus.
From the desire of being loved. Deliver…
From the desire of being extolled. Deliver…
From the desire of being honored. Deliver…
From the desire of being praised. Deliver…
From the desire of being preferred to others. Deliver…
From the desire of being consulted. Deliver…
From the desire of being approved. Deliver…
From the fear of being humiliated. Deliver…
From the fear of being despised. Deliver…
From the fear of suffering rebukes. Deliver…
From the fear of being calumniated. Deliver…
From the fear of being forgotten. Deliver…
From the fear of being ridiculed. Deliver…
From the fear of being wronged. Deliver…
From the fear of being suspected. Deliver…

That others may be loved more than I.
Jesus, grant me the grace to desire it.
That others may be esteemed more than I. Jesus…
That, in the opinion of the world,
others may increase and I may decrease. Jesus…
That others may be chosen and I set aside. Jesus…
That others may be praised and I unnoticed. Jesus…
That others may be preferred to me in everything. Jesus…
That others may become holier than I,
provided that I may become as holy as I should. Jesus…
Amen.
